Welcome to the best Gingerbread house on the block!

Okay, welcome to the only Gingerbread house on the block!

What's more "Christmasy" then Christmas candy and Gingerbread houses?

And what's better for a front porch than a unique and fun Gingerbread house decoration?

Nothing!  And I had entirely too much fun creating these plastic canvas candies and candy mesh  garland.  And way too much fun, being the Gingerbread house with the cute front porch decorations.

I don't think I have decorated my house for Christmas in 4 years.  We have either been moving, had our stuff in boxes somewhere, or I just was too busy to ever get around to it.

So this year, I knew it was time to get out of the Christmas slump and create a front porch that would make me smile every time  I went in and out and in and out picking up the kids and taking them places and then picking up a different kid to take somewhere else and then bringing one kid home before going to get the other....you get the drift.

I definitely needed a smile on those days.

So we decided to theme our Christmas around a Gingerbread House.

I started the decorations with a Gumball wreath.  It was a quick and fun Christmas wreath for the center of the door.  You can see how I made the Gumball wreath here.

Around the door, I followed some YouTube videos to make a red and white Mesh garland.  I strung some multi colored lights around and through the garland to give it a glow at night.

Then I started creating plastic canvas candy pieces.  I stuck with a red, white, and green color scheme to give it more of a Christmas feel.  The M&Ms and the candy pieces are 3D using stuffing and plastic canvas design elements.

In the upper corners of the door and candy garland, I created plastic canvas peppermints out of plastic canvas circles.  They were entirely free handed and an interesting project to work on.  I haven't worked with round plastic canvas pieces in a LONG time and trying to keep everything even was a trick.  But I figure the inconsistency brings a bit more reality to the piece.  (Right?!?)

I also created round tubes and wrapped them in Saran Wrap.  Then I tied bows on both ends to look like candy pieces.  I used a bit of wire to wrap around the form of the mesh garland to secure them in place.

Next to my door, I placed two Gingerbread figures that I found at Hobby Lobby on sale.  I think they really tie the candy garland into my Gingerbread House theme.

Lastly, I purchased some lighted candy canes and placed them on my front window to look like the candy canes were lighting the shutters and window.  I really can't decide if I like the effect or not.  I wish I could figure out how to hide the wires more, but when you are renting, you really can't do too much with the front porch.

Over all, I absolutely love how the front porch turned out.  I love that the candy garland looks so cool, but that I can still make more candy pieces over the years to add to it.
